Supporting The New Breed of Philly Filmmaking & Filmmakers

"I no longer live in Philly but grew up in Kensington and (if the stars align) hope to be shooting in and around my hometown this coming summer. It's reassuring to know that there are entities like the Greater Philadelphia Film Office that support genuine Philly flavored artists and stories through unique endeavors like the Greater Philadelphia Film Festival and the Set in Philadelphia Screenplay competition. Some of us know there is so much more creativity and dramatic potential to our city than the punch drunk palooka "Yo Adrian!" persona so often unfairly forced upon the movie going public. With the continued support of the Greater Philadelphia Film Office, soon the world will know that, too. Thanks again." Joe Nienalt, Screenwriter

On Monday, I saw a Cast Hotline listing that looked interesting -- casting for a film called "Stupid Boy Friend," with audition sites in Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York. I submitted my resume and head shot to the e-mail address on the posting and got a call the next morning. I talked to a lady named Danielle and we set up an audition time at a studio on Castor Avenue. So far, so good. Then, Danielle told me there was a 35-dollar "registration fee." I told her that sounded like a scam and hung up. I also e-mailed the Film Office, informing me of this event. I got a reply from Joan Bressler, agreeing that this "registration fee" was far from kosher. In fact, as a result of my e-mail, the notice was pulled from the Film Office Web site. Joan also urged me to post something about this thing on the GPFO Blog. Here it is. All I can add is "Caveat Actor."

First of all, I am new to the film industry, but I have already met quite a few interesting people and got involved in small independant projects thanks to http://filmind.meetup.com/239 . Their meetings are every 2nd Thursday of the month, and they just recently relocated to a new studio for their meetings at The Fortress for the Arts. If you want to meet people interested in Philly based independant film, we welcome every type of movie industry person around. Also, this Saturday is a party at the Fortress of the Arts where there will be many artists, musicians, photographers, models, makeup artists, set designers, fashion stylists, and well, a little bit of everything.. So check us out.
