Set shortly after the Civil War, the story revolves around Sethe, a hard working former slave who currently resides on the outskirts of Cincinnati with her grown daughter Denver. Inexplicably, a young woman named "Beloved" who walks and speaks awkwardly as well as behaves in a childlike manner, one day shows up to their house resulting in a story of personal growth and mutual understanding.
